For anyone getting started with the camping life there is much to learn. Some we learn by trial and error. Some we learn by the trial and error of someone else. The second option is often best, right? Why reinvent the wheel?

Of all the things people use for camping or van life or living off the grid, some are critical and some are just plain extra. Extra like our espresso coffee set up (check out the video in the May 25, 2026, blog post). After all, there's always instant coffee. Yuck.

This is the perfect place for a "just ask Fred" column. Especially for anything mechanical.

Here are a few true necessities for truck or car camping:

  • POWER - Have any questions about using a portable power station, solar charging or connecting it for charging to the alternator in your vehicle?

  • WATER - How much do you need? Where to get it? Storage containers.

  • CAMPER/SHELTER - How to find the camper to fit your needs, what if an extra shelter or covering is useful, how to connect things together, staying warm or cool.

  • TOOLS - for emergencies or just to have on hand for everyday needs.

  • VEHICLE MAINTENANCE - what to do before the trip.

Here's your chance to ask the guy who maintains the bones of our camping rig. Click the box and send your questions by email to Fred.

Here's Fred looking forward to our next adventure.
